The industry sailed past its $20 billion milestone last year according to the IAB, opening the doors wider than the narrow number of sites that have benefitted from online advertising, namely the large Web 1.0 sites like iVillage and the Portals, into a much more familiar but fragmented world in which small sites, like those represented by Burst, are gaining interest by media planners and the marketers they work for. As we discover greater interest in the focused, single-topic web sites that have defined Burst’s primary focus since its founding in the pioneering days of 1995, we thought this blog would represent a good place to espouse the value of those online publishers, frame the case for why aggregating these vertical niche sites together defines the future of ad networks, and help capture the thoughts of others that we interact with in this business.
